After years of campaigning, lobbying and briefing, the legislation to establish a statutory state-level investigation branch for healthcare safety has finally been enacted. The transition of the Healthcare Safety Investigation Branch (HSIB) as an operationally independent division of NHS England has thankfully finally begun. This is a critical moment in the development of the organisation and a moment that we have been waiting for many years.
HSIB has now begun a year-long transition as a shadow ALB, during which a chair, non-executives and executive team will be appointed for the HSSIB. The aim is to begin operating as HSSIB in April 2023. The transition will also involve transfer of HSIB maternity investigations to a new special health authority, to be established through secondary legislation and also operating from April 2023.
Murray Anderson-Wallace will continue to Chair the Advisory Panel of HSIB and has joined the Department of Health & Social Care Transition Board, which will oversee the development of HSSIB and the Maternity & Neonatal Safety Investigation Special Health Authority.
